Latest news update

13th May 2021: Corona/COVID-19 crisis: With the global pandemic still developing dynamically, it continues to be unpredictable if we can welcome you on August 31st for the PRAHA2020 conference. While being committed to hold the conference if it can become a scientifically successful and also enjoyable event, we sadly have to realize that the local situation will not allow us to proceed with the organization of the PRAHA2020 meeting. Likewise, we surveyed the international travel situation and projection thereof for prospective speakers and participants - with discouraging results. Therefore, with a heavy heart, we announce that PRAHA2020 is postponed to become PRAHA2022. Regretfully, we are missing-out the 50-year Golden Jubilee of the series after being first held at the Czech Technical University Prague in September 1970 as well as the 50th anniversary of the pioneering, influential publication by J. T. Hougen, P. R. Bunker, and J. W. C. Johns also known as the HBJ-paper. On the positive side, indeed, it was the spirit of these authors and continues to be the sprit of this conference series to look forward: We wish all of you the success and luck that is needed to make it through these difficult times and we are looking forward to welcome you at PRAHA2022, taking place from 29.08.2022 to 02.09.2022 in Prague.

25th April 2020: Corona/COVID-19 crisis: The global pandemic is still developing, and it is more uncertain than ever if PRAHA2020 can take place as planned. In actual fact, it is not only uncertain, it is extremely improbable. While we are committed to hold the conference if possible, organizational requirements will not allow us to delay this decision very much beyond mid-May. Postponing the registration deadline at least until then, we will inform you further during the second half of May, hoping that this time frame will also allow you to arrange your travel accordingly in the highly unlikely event that the conference will take place.

24th March 2020: Corona/COVID-19 crisis: Owing to the global pandemic it seems uncertain if PRAHA2020 can take place as planned. At the moment, travel to the Czech Republic is severely restricted, just like the travel to almost anywhere else. We will inform you about new developments here, and believe that new, and perhaps clearer, information will be available in mid April.

25th February 2020: WARNING: We have become aware of a phishing scheme in which prospective participants at PRAHA2020 have received a telephone call from "Hotel Services" (or so). The caller will say that this organization is responsible for booking your accommodation for the conference. They may send you a form to fill in with credit card or other payment information. DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY SUCH REQUEST. IT IS A SCAM.

There will be no communication by any third-party service on our behalf. You will not need to visit any websites other than those communicated through the circulars and/or linked to this page. We are planning to organize registration and payments through a website, but it will be accessible through a link from this page.

28th January 2020: The first circular for PRAHA2020 is presently being distributed. Click here to see it.

9th September 2018: The BILBAO2018 conference ran extremely well and a good time was had by all. The venue at Bilbao was very interesting and enjoyable.

The next conference, PRAHA2020, will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, with Professor Štĕpán Urban as principal organizer. Preliminary dates are August 31st-September 4th, 2020. PRAHA2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the first conference in the series. Stay tuned for further information.

50 years of Hougen-Bunker-Johns
PRAHA2020 constitutes the golden jubilee of the biennial PRAHA conferences, the first one being held 50 years ago, in 1970. Simultaneously, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the pioneering, influential paper by J. T. Hougen, P. R. Bunker, and J. W. C. Johns [HBJ; "The vibration-rotation problem in triatomic molecules allowing for a large-amplitude bending vibration," Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy 34 (1970) 136-172]. To celebrate these events, Per Jensen will organize a special mini-symposium entitled "50 years of Hougen-Bunker-Johns" featuring P. R. Bunker, Sergei N. Yurchenko, and Per Jensen as keynote speakers. Scientific contributions to this mini-symposium on the subject of large-amplitude vibration in molecules, treated with HBJ theory or other methods, are very much encouraged. Also, in recognition of Jon Hougen, who passed away since the previous meeting in the series, BILBAO2018, "reminiscence" talks, remembering Jon's immense contributions to high-resolution molecular spectroscopy, the important role he played at the PRAHA meetings, and the anecdotes about him, are also welcome at the mini-symposium.

Historical / PRAHA internet archive ....

Dr. Dušan Papoušek

The principal organizer of the first 11 meetings of the "PRAHA" series, Dr. Dušan Papoušek, passed away on 14th October 2010 at the age of 80 years after a long battle with cancer. We remember him not only as a distinguished spectroscopist, but also as the organizer of legendary conferences at Liblice Castle.

Click here for a brief history of the "PRAHA" spectroscopy conferences.

Dusan Papousek
Dr. Jon T. Hougen

The establishment of the PRAHA internet archive was inspired by a very personal account of, on one hand, the goings-on at some of the early conferences in the PRAHA series and, on the other hand, the intricacies of the Czech language, given by Dr. Jon T. Hougen at PRAHA2008. This talk marked the occasion of PRAHA2008 being the 20th conference in the series. Dr. Hougen could be aptly described as the Spirit of Conferences Recent and here he is being watched by the Ghost of Conferences Past.

Unfortunately, Dr. Hougen passed away suddenly on January 28th, 2019, in Taipei, Taiwan, while attending a meeting of the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Science. He will be sorely missed. He was one important factor in giving the PRAHA meetings their unique atmosphere. He was not only a highly distinguished scientist, he was a mentor of young spectroscopists and a catalyst of scientific communication.

J. T. Hougen

The PRAHA internet archive is relatively complete. It now contains the programs, with all available abstracts, from all meetings in the series (No abstracts were collected for the first meeting in 1970). Also, there are at least a few photographs from each of the meetings. However, there are very few pictures from the 1988, 1990, 1994, and 1996 meetings, and rather few pictures from the 1992, 1998, and 2000 meetings. If you have photographs from any of these meetings that are not on the site already, we would be very grateful for them. Please scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions as to how to deliver them to us.
