2012 Benedict Spectroscopy Award
|
|
The Benedict Award honours the life-time contributions and achievements of a
scientist who has made a landmark impact on spectroscopy research and its
applications.
It is introduced in honour of William S. Benedict, widely acclaimed for his fundamental contributions
delineating the mechanism of the water-vapour laser,
his early work on molecular line shape, and for his discovery of
hydrogen chloride in the atmosphere of the planet Venus.
This Elsevier Award is administered by the Editors and Publisher of the
Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer (JQSRT). Starting in 2012,
the Benedict
Award is being presented every two years. It consists of a glass statuette and an official
Elsevier certificate.
The 2012
Benedict Award
recipient is Professor Peter F. Bernath,
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,
Old Dominion University,
Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A.
In an address given in connection with the PRAHA2012 chamber concert
on Friday, September 7, 2012, in the historical Carolinum lecture hall in central Prague,
Dr. Laurence S. Rothman, editor-in-chief of JQSRT and chairman of the international steering
committee of PRAHA2012, marked the occasion of the first Benedict Award having been
presented.

Historical ....
|
|
The principal organizer of the first 11 meetings of the "PRAHA" series,
Dr. Duan Papouek, passed away
on 14th October 2010
at the age of 80 years after a long battle with cancer.
We remember him not only as a distinguished spectroscopist, but also
as the organizer of legendary
conferences at Liblice Castle.
