THE FLOODS IN PRAGUE

Less than three weeks before PRAHA2002, there was severe flooding in Prague. In a heroic effort of the local organizing committee, the conference was relocated to Prague - Dejvice, and it ran extremely well with the usual high scientific standard. It is believed that a good time was had by all.

This is the "originally planned" conference site as it looked in the morning of August 14th, 2002.

The photograph above shows a part of the Old City with the hotel Four Seasons (brown). The apparently fragile barrier is miraculously keeping the river water away from the evacuated Old City. At the time the water level culminated, the water stood 5-10 cm below the top of the barriers. If the water had passed the barriers it would have been the end of the Prague Old City.
